For the majority of panic attack sufferers, they are in a high state of anxiety even before they have left the driveway, because they are worrying about having a panic attack driving and causing a large multiple pile-up on the highway. One of the first things to remember is that almost all drivers who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks have clean driving records and have probable never been involved in an accident. The reason for this is that because of their condition, they are generally a lot more cautious and careful than say, a person who has worked a long day and is stressed out, and who wants to get home quickly.
By the nature of their condition, an anxious driver will have higher levels of sensory perception, and therefore will be much more aware of potential driving hazards and more focused on the task of driving itself. This is not to suggest that anxious driving is the ideal way to commute. However it is important to make the point because so many people beat themselves up over being anxious whilst driving.
So one way to move forward is that before you even step into your car to make your journey, tell yourself that you are a good and safe driver. By reaffirming this, it should go someway towards alleviating panic attacks driving.
The second main concern of anxiety whilst driving, is the mounting fear of being trapped in a vehicle in some manner. By this it could mean having to sit in long traffic jams on highways for hours on end or traffic congestion in a tunnel.
When permitted to, your mind can run away with all kinds of scenarios whereby you might be totally cornered or trapped in your vehicle with absolutely no help available.
One of the most important things to do if your mind is imagining all different worst case scenarios is to give it some serious thought and ask yourself whether there is any given situation that you are going to encounter on your journey where you could be truly trapped with absolutely no means of escape
Of course there isn’t……….
You see eventually gridlocked traffic starts to move, and even if it is stationary for a considerable amount of time, there is always an exit route from the car. If you can think logically and counteract these fears, you can undermine the control that the fear itself has over you. So whatever your worst case scenario maybe, there is always a logical explanation that will explain the reasons as to why you will not get trapped.
So if you can curb your fears and not let your fears control your actions, then your driving could and will become a pleasurable experience once again.
